Filing in context
The Fuel tank is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 37 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Subaru notifications from 1997 in this archive. For scale, 634 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 8 months.
Defect
If the fuel line system becomes blocked, internal fuel tank pressure may rise under certain operating conditions, causing the tank to deform. In the worst case, the deformed tank may contact the propeller shaft, damaging the tank, allowing fuel to leak and resulting in a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
Inspect all vehicles and replace the fuel filler cap with a corrected part. Where the fuel tank is already making contact with surrounding components, replace the tank with a conforming unit.
