Filing in context
The Propeller Shaft is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 52 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 5 Mazda notifications from 1995 in this archive. For scale, 3,183 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 months.
Defect
On vehicles with a wheelbase of 2,810 mm, an inadequate powertrain design causes the propeller shaft to vibrate abnormally at top speed. In the worst case, the propeller shaft may fracture, rendering the vehicle inoperable. Note: Of the affected vehicles already in service, 208 units received an interim remedy in September 1995 under notification number 452, consisting of propeller shaft replacement and fuel injection pump adjustment to limit maximum vehicle speed.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the transmission and propeller shaft with corrected/revised parts. On vehicles that received the interim remedy, readjust the fuel injection pump to restore the original maximum vehicle speed.
