Filing in context
The Throttle is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 4 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Honda notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 132 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 6 months.
Issue
The waterproof boot fitted to the adjuster section of the throttle cable was manufactured using material contaminated with a foreign substance. Atmospheric ozone degrades the boot during service, allowing water to enter the cable interior during rain or wet-weather riding. In cold temperatures, the intruded water may freeze and, in the worst case, prevent the throttle grip from returning to the closed position, causing engine speed to remain elevated.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the waterproof boot. If the boot is damaged, replace the complete throttle cable assembly with a new part. If the boot is not damaged, replace the waterproof boot alone with a new part.
