Filing in context
The Exhaust emission reduction device is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 3,983 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 6 months.
Issue
On compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, the catalytic muffler uses an inadequate method to secure the catalyst element. Depending on operating conditions, the catalyst mounting may loosen. Continued operation allows the catalyst to contact the muffler's inner wall, generating abnormal noise. In the worst case, the catalyst may fracture and exhaust emissions may exceed the CNG vehicle exhaust gas technical guideline values.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the catalytic muffler. If the affected unit is installed, replace the complete catalytic muffler assembly with the corrected part.
Affected models & chassis ranges
