Filing in context
The Starting System is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 35 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Honda notifications from 2002 in this archive. For scale, 2,381 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 months.
Defect
The ignition switch contact points in the engine starting system carry excessive current, generating a large arc discharge each time the main power is switched on. Repeated starting operations cause the contacts to wear excessively, reducing contact pressure. Vehicle vibration during driving can then cause the contacts to shift and ride up on carbon deposits, resulting in poor electrical continuity. In the worst case, the engine may stall suddenly without warning. Note: restarting is possible because the sliding motion of the contacts during a start attempt removes the carbon deposits.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, the ignition switch will be replaced with a corrected part. Because supply of the corrected part requires time, all owners will be notified of the defect as an interim measure, and ignition switches will be replaced with the corrected part on a rolling basis.
