Defect
Inadequate manufacturing controls for internal components of the rear seat belt retractor mechanism allowed shafts of an incorrect specification to be assembled into some units. When a collision occurs and the seat belt force limiter activates, the amount of belt webbing paid out may increase unintentionally, and the restraint system may fail to provide the required occupant protection performance.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the serial numbers of the left and right rear seat belts and, where applicable, replace them with conforming units.
