Filing in context
The Shock Absorber is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 35 UD Trucks notifications from 2021 in this archive. For scale, 3,776 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 months.
Defect
On large trucks, (1) the shock absorber piston design on vehicles equipped with an air suspension height-adjustment system is incorrect. Lateral forces cause excessive contact pressure between the piston and cylinder wall. Repeatedly raising the vehicle to maximum height and lowering it during loading and unloading operations allows the piston ring groove to score the cylinder's inner wall. Continued use in this condition causes metal fragments to accumulate and seize in the piston ring area, leading to bending or fracture of the shock absorber. In the worst case, the damaged shock absorber may contact the tire, causing a burst or generating enough heat to ignite a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
(1) On all vehicles, replace the shock absorber with the corrected part. In addition, distribute a supplementary addendum to the owner's manual describing the characteristics of the height-adjustment system.
