Defect
On continuously variable transmissions (CVT), an incorrect control program may allow the steel belt, which is the shifting element, to sustain surface damage. Continued operation in this condition can cause the steel belt to fracture. In the worst case, the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the CVT control unit with the corrected/updated software. Additionally, inspect the CVT control unit fault history; if records indicate the vehicle has experienced this defect condition, replace the CVT assembly with a new unit.
