Defect
In the continuously variable transmission (CVT) torque converter, the lockup clutch spring was improperly formed during manufacturing. When the lockup mechanism engages, excessive stress is applied to the spring, causing it to break. The broken spring falls into the interior of the torque converter, generating abnormal noise. In the worst case, the spring becomes jammed inside the converter, causing the engine to stall during launch or acceleration and leaving the vehicle unable to move.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the torque converter with a known-good unit.
