Filing in context
The Lubrication system is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 9 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 39 Mazda notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 2,546 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 7 months.
Defect
Insufficient user notification regarding oil filter selection for diesel engine vehicles means that an oil filter with an incorrect relief valve opening pressure may be installed. When such a filter is used, metal particles generated inside the engine may not be adequately captured, potentially causing the defects described in items (1) and (2).
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the oil filter. If a non-conforming filter is found, replace it with the corrected part. In addition, notify users of the proper filter specification and affix a caution label to the engine hood stating that non-genuine oil filters must not be used.
