Defect

The master cylinder was designed without accounting for manufacturing variation in the booster's internal spring. This allows the piston to be pushed at an angle, increasing sliding resistance against the cup seal. When the brake pedal is depressed rapidly, the cup seal may roll over and fold. Brake fluid then leaks from the seal into the interior of the booster. Continued use causes the warning light to illuminate and, in the worst case, braking force decreases and stopping distance is extended.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, apply a dedicated lubricant to the master cylinder piston.
