Filing in context
The Engine general is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 2 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Subaru notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 58 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 9 years and 1 month.
Defect
The engine vibration-damping rubber crankshaft pulley is improperly designed, causing the adhesive bond between the pulley body and the rubber damper to peel apart during service. This allows the pulley ring to spin freely or detach entirely, disabling the alternator and causing the engine to stall. In the worst case, the detached ring may become a hazard to other road users.
Corrective action
Inspect the crankshaft pulley on all vehicles; if the pulley is of the adhesive-bonded type, replace it with a corrected part.
