Filing in context
The Service Brake (General) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 16 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 14 Subaru notifications from 2019 in this archive. For scale, 159 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 8 years and 6 months.
Defect
The brake light switch uses a contact design that is susceptible to silicone gas volatilized by vehicle interior cleaning products and cosmetics. That silicone gas deposits an insulating film on the contact points, causing a continuity failure. As a result, the brake lights may fail to illuminate, the stability control warning light may activate, and the engine may become difficult to start.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the brake light switch with a corrected part.
