Filing in context
The Computer (Steering) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 10 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 40 Nissan notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 1,532 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 10 months.
Defect
The electronic steering system (Direct Adaptive Steering) contains an improperly designed initialization program. If the vehicle is parked with the wheels turned and the engine is then started, the system may miscalculate the wheel steering angle, causing a discrepancy between the steering wheel angle and the actual tire angle. As a result, returning the steering wheel to the center position does not straighten the tires, preventing the driver from launching in the intended direction. Continued operation may prevent the driver from completing intended turning maneuvers.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the electronic steering system control module with the corrected/updated software.
