Filing in context

This notification is a joint filing by 2 manufacturers: Mitsubishi & Nissan.

The Self-diagnostic function (engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 4 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 56 Mitsubishi notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 1,279 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 9 months.

Defect

The engine control computer software is incorrectly programmed. When the software detects an abnormal signal from the throttle position sensor, fail-safe control fixes the throttle opening. If the throttle position sensor signal returns to normal while that control is active, the throttle may gradually open. As a result, engine speed rises progressively and the vehicle may accelerate even though the accelerator pedal is not depressed.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control computer software.
