Filing in context
The Other (Electrical Equipment) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 13 Mazda notifications from 2014 in this archive. For scale, 1,049 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 3 months.
Defect
In the regenerative braking energy recovery system, the capacitor fault detection program in the engine control computer is incorrect. As a result, a normally functioning capacitor may be incorrectly identified as faulty, causing the alternator to stop generating power. This triggers the charge warning light and displays a "Charging System Error" message on the display. If driving continues, decreasing battery voltage causes the engine warning light to illuminate and acceleration performance to degrade progressively. In the worst case, the engine stalls and cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the capacitor fault detection program in the engine control computer with the corrected software.
