Filing in context
The Other (Electrical Equipment) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 17 Mazda notifications from 2013 in this archive. For scale, 1,675 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 months.
Defect
The DC-DC converter contains an internal electronic circuit board on which some capacitors have developed cracks. These cracked capacitors may short circuit, causing the DC-DC converter to melt. In the worst case, a vehicle fire may occur.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the DC-DC converter with a corrected part and add a protective cover to the harness to prevent damage during replacement. Because an initial shortage of corrected parts is anticipated, some vehicles will receive an interim measure: a bypass is added to prevent current from flowing through the DC-DC converter, and the engine control program is reprogrammed. Once corrected parts become available, those vehicles will have the DC-DC converter replaced with the corrected part, the harness protective cover installed, and the engine control program reprogrammed.
