Defect
In the electric power steering gearbox, repeatedly turning the steering wheel hard to full lock can cause the pinion shaft retaining nut to loosen. With continued use, the pinion shaft can no longer be held securely, preventing full transfer of motor assist force and making the steering heavy. In the worst case, steering control may be lost entirely.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the affected nut with a crimped (staked) nut.
