Filing in context
The Other (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 19 Toyota notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 176 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 10 months.
Defect
The crankshaft position sensor housing is improperly molded, resulting in insufficient engagement depth on the wiring connector lock and inadequate sealing by the O-ring. Engine oil gradually infiltrates the sensor through the deficient O-ring seal. Continued operation causes the intruding oil to thermally expand inside the sensor, deforming the connector lock. In the worst case, the connector separates, causing a loss of continuity that stalls the engine and prevents restart.
Corrective action
Replace the crankshaft position sensor on all vehicles with a conforming part.
