Filing in context
The Axle is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 29 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 20 Hino notifications from 2008 in this archive. For scale, 3,840 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 4 months.
Defect
In large low-floor buses, the front axle has insufficient strength. Repeatedly subjecting the axle to rolling forces and full-lock steering maneuvers over an extended period can cause cracks to develop in the axle. In the worst case, continued use can progress the cracking until the axle fractures, resulting in loss of steering control.
Corrective action
Replace the front axle on all vehicles with the corrected part. Because supply of the corrected part will require time, all vehicles are to be inspected for cracks first, with cracked vehicles prioritized for immediate replacement.
