Filing in context
The Other (Running Gear) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,269 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 4 months.
Defect
The front hub has insufficient strength. Repeated high-frequency turning maneuvers can cause cracks to develop near the base of the hub flange. Maintenance history, load conditions, and other contributing factors may accelerate crack initiation. If the vehicle continues to be used in this condition, the cracks will propagate and, in the worst case, the flange may fracture and the wheel may detach. (Note: This notification adds vehicles newly identified as requiring corrective action based on subsequent strength verification results conducted after the original recall, Notification No. 1056, dated March 24, 2004.)
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the hub with the corrected part (current latest-specification hub). Because verification and supply of the corrected part requires time, an interim measure will be applied: inspect the hub for cracks. Hubs found to have cracks will be replaced with the corrected part immediately; vehicles with no cracks will receive the corrected part at a later date.
