Filing in context

The Computer (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 49 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 19 Toyota notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 730 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 11 months.

Defect

The engine control computer does not respond correctly to a fault in the air-fuel ratio sensor circuit, which monitors oxygen concentration in the exhaust gas. If the sensor's internal wiring develops a disconnection, the proper air-fuel ratio may not be maintained. Continued use under these conditions can cause the catalytic converter to overheat and sustain damage. In the worst case, a vehicle fire may occur.

Corrective action

Replace the engine control computer and the air-fuel ratio sensor on all vehicles with corrected parts. Also inspect the catalytic converter and replace it with a new unit if damage is found.
