Filing in context
The Exhaust pipe is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 32 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 3 Subaru notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 606 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 2 months.
Defect
The weld joining the front auxiliary muffler to the exhaust pipe is improperly made. Vibration during vehicle operation causes cracks to develop at the weld. With continued use, the cracks propagate and, in the worst case, the auxiliary muffler may separate from the exhaust pipe, causing a significant increase in exhaust noise.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the affected exhaust pipe with a conforming part. Because full parts supply will take time, vehicles exhibiting abnormal exhaust noise are to have the exhaust pipe replaced immediately; vehicles showing no abnormality are to be repaired once parts become available.
