Filing in context
The Engine (General) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 48 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 70 Mitsubishi notifications from 2006 in this archive. For scale, 4,782 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 month.
Defect
The engine rear mount, which supports the engine, has insufficient rubber damper strength. Repeated rotational rocking of the engine during acceleration causes cracks to develop in the mount rubber, which may progress to a complete fracture. Continued operation after fracture damages the engine front mount as well and, in the worst case, allows the powertrain-side support of the transmission control linkage to separate, rendering the vehicle unable to shift gears. Note: This recall supplements notification nos. 1238 (September 29, 2004) and 1447 (June 3, 2005), which contained errors in the affected vehicle selection; additional vehicles have been identified and are covered under this new filing.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the engine rear mount with the corrected part and replace the engine front mount with a new part.
