Filing in context
The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 140 Mitsubishi notifications from 2005 in this archive. For scale, 630 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 8 months.
Defect
The printed circuit board for the generator activation circuit, located on the back of the combination meter, is improperly designed. Rising cabin temperatures and heat generated by the meter itself cause the circuit board to expand and contract repeatedly, producing excessive stress in the circuit traces. This cycling causes broken wires in the traces. As a result, the generator fails to activate at startup and, in the worst case, the engine stalls during driving and cannot be restarted.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the generator activation circuit on the printed circuit board with a corrected/revised part.
