Defect
On vehicles equipped with independent front suspension, the water ingress prevention structure at the inner bearing area of the front wheel hub is inadequate. Muddy water can penetrate the bearing, causing rust and wear. Continued operation may produce vehicle vibration and abnormal noise. In the worst case, the bearing may fail, rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
(1) Two-wheel drive vehicles: On all vehicles, replace the waterproof cover and hub oil seal with corrected parts to prevent water from reaching the hub oil seal area. If rust is present on the oil seal surface of the steering knuckle, press-fit an additional retainer into that area. Inspect the bearing and replace with new parts if any abnormality is found. (2) Four-wheel drive vehicles: On all vehicles, replace the waterproof cover with a corrected part to prevent water from reaching the hub oil seal area. Replace the hub oil seal with a new part and inspect the bearing, replacing with new parts if any abnormality is found. If rust is present on the oil seal surface of the steering knuckle, replace the knuckle with a new part.
