Defect
On vehicles with independent front suspension, the water ingress prevention structure at the inner bearing area of the front wheel hub is inadequate, allowing muddy water to penetrate the bearing and cause rust and wear. Continued use in this condition produces body vibration and abnormal noise. In the worst case, the bearing may sustain damage, rendering the vehicle inoperable. (Note: This recall supersedes recall notification no. 952, dated June 9, 2003, in which the corrective measures were determined to be insufficient. The scope and content of the remedy have been revised accordingly.)
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the water ingress prevention cover at the inner bearing area of the front wheel hub (including the ABS rotor on ABS-equipped vehicles) with the corrected part, and replace the hub oil seal and oil seal retainer with new parts. On vehicles where water ingress into the bearing is confirmed, also replace the bearing with a new unit. As an interim measure pending availability of corrected parts, inspect the hub bearing, oil seal, oil seal retainer, hub grease, and hub cover, and replace any components showing abnormalities with new parts.

状況
前輪独立懸架車の走行装置において、前輪ハブ内側軸受け部の水浸入防止構造が不適切な ため、当該軸受け内部に泥水が浸入して錆付き・摩耗が生じるものがある。そのため、そ のままの状態で使用を続けると、車体振動・異音が発生し、最悪の場合、当該軸受けが破 損し、走行不能となるおそれがある。 (備考)本届出は、平成15年6月9日付「届出番号952」のリコール届出において、不具合に 対する改善措置の内容が不十分であったため、改善措置の内容及び対象範囲を見直し、再 度対策を行うものである。
改善措置
全車両、前輪ハブ内側軸受け部の水侵入防止カバー(ABS付車においてはABSロータを含む )を対策品に、ハブオイルシールとオイルシールリテーナを新品に交換する。 また、軸受け内部に水侵入が認められるものは、ベアリングを新品に交換する。 なお、対策品の供給に時間を要するため、当面の暫定措置として、当該部を点検し、ハブ ベアリング、オイルシール、オイルシールリテーナ、ハブグリース、ハブカバーに異常が 認められるものは、新品に交換する。
