The Wiring is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 236 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 26 Toyota notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 4,037 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 month.
Defect
On police vehicles, the wiring harness supplying the beacon lights and siren has insufficient current capacity. Prolonged use causes age-related deterioration, allowing oxidation to form on the connector terminals and generating heat. Continued use in this condition causes the connector to melt and, in the worst case, may result in the beacon lights failing to illuminate and the siren failing to sound.
Corrective action
On all affected vehicles, replace the wiring harness with the corrected part having greater current capacity.
