Filing in context
The Drive force transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 5 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,386 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 7 months.
Defect
The oil seal and O-ring in the chain-driven transfer case have insufficient heat resistance. During sustained high-speed driving, transfer fluid temperature rises, causing the seal or O-ring to deteriorate and allow transmission oil to flow into the transfer case. The additional oil increases chain churning resistance, raising fluid temperature further until oil is expelled through the breather vent. In the worst case, this can result in a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the oil seal and O-ring with corrected parts. Also replace the output-side oil seal and O-ring with corrected parts.
