Filing in context
The Starting system is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 21 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 2,397 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 11 months.
Defect
In the starting system of large route buses, the flywheel ring gear hardness and the wiring length of the starter magnetic switch activation circuit are both incorrect. During starting operation, the starter pinion collides with and interferes with the flywheel ring gear, causing poor mesh engagement and resulting in chipping and damage to the gear teeth. This makes engine starting difficult or impossible. If starting is attempted repeatedly, a vehicle fire may occur in the worst case.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the starter assembly (including the starter relay) with the corrected part. On vehicles not equipped with a delay relay, install the delay relay as an additional part. On vehicles with incorrect flywheel ring gear hardness, replace the ring gear with the corrected part. On vehicles already equipped with a corrected flywheel ring gear, inspect the gear face and replace with a new part if any abnormality is found.
