Filing in context

The Other (Running Gear) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 8 Suzuki notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,498 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 month.

Defect

Improper press-fitting of the spacer into the aluminum speed sensor panel on front and rear wheels generates aluminum fragments during the process. These fragments may fall into the ABS sensor chamber located between the panel and the wheel during vehicle vibration in operation. If the wheel temperature rises from heavy brake use and an aluminum fragment becomes wedged in the gap between the panel and the wheel, the fragment may temporarily seize in that gap and prevent the wheel from rotating smoothly. In the worst case, the panel can seize to the wheel and rotate with it, causing the ABS sensor to contact surrounding components, sustain damage, illuminate the warning lamp, and disable ABS function.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, inspect the ABS sensor chamber between the speed sensor panel and wheel, and the area around the panel shaft, on all four wheels for aluminum fragments. Remove any fragments found. On vehicles where fragments have already seized in the gap, remove the fragments and replace any damaged parts with new ones.
