Filing in context
This is the only filing in the archive that cites the Other (running gear) as the affected component. This filing is one of 150 Mitsubishi notifications from 2004 in this archive. For scale, 3,555 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 2 months.
Defect
The front hub has insufficient strength. Repeated high-frequency turning maneuvers may cause cracks to develop near the base of the hub flange. Additional factors such as maintenance condition and loading conditions may accelerate crack initiation. Continued use allows the crack to propagate and, in the worst case, the affected area may fracture, causing wheel detachment. Note: 1. This notification adds vehicles that were inadvertently excluded from Recall No. 1056, filed March 24, 2004. 2. The number of affected vehicles reflects domestic production figures.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, confirm the type of installed hub and replace it with the corrected/revised part as necessary. Because verification and supply of the corrected part require time, the following interim measures apply: (1) For vehicles on which the current latest-model hub can be installed, confirm that the current latest-model hub is already fitted; replace it if not. (2) For vehicles on which the current latest-model hub cannot be installed, inspect the hub for cracks and replace any cracked hub with a corresponding new part.
