Filing in context
The Speedometer is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 36 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 6 Hino notifications from 2002 in this archive. For scale, 3,304 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 4 months.
Defect
The electrical wiring in the speedometer circuit has insufficient waterproofing. Water that enters the wiring can reach the vehicle speed sensor connector, causing the terminals to rust. Rust on the terminals produces an unstable vehicle speed signal, and the speedometer may display an incorrect reading.
Corrective action
1) On all vehicles, replace the affected electrical wiring with a corrected part. 2) On all vehicles, inspect the vehicle speed sensor connector terminals. If rust is present, replace the vehicle speed sensor with a new unit. If no rust is present, clean the terminals and pack them with grease.
