Filing in context
The Automatic Transmission (A/T) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 19 of its 4,890 filings. This is the only Nissan notification from 1995 in this archive. For scale, 3,871 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 5 months.
Defect
A portion of the software in the electronic control unit governing automatic transmission hydraulic pressure is incorrect. When the engine is started with a degraded battery while a high electrical load from medical equipment is applied, the control unit may malfunction, reducing hydraulic control pressure. Continued driving in this condition causes wear of the automatic transmission's internal friction materials, and the resulting wear debris degrades transmission performance. In the worst case, the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the automatic transmission control unit with an improved unit, and replace the automatic transmission and oil cooler with new units. On vehicles not equipped with an oil filter, install one.
