Filing in context
The Drive Force Transfer Unit is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 3 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 8 Honda notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 852 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 11 months.
Issue
During manufacturing, improper straightening of the countershaft after heat treatment left microscopic cracks in some shafts. Repeated aggressive downshifts at high speed cause these cracks to propagate until the shaft fractures, rendering the vehicle inoperable. In the worst case, the rear wheels may lock.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the countershaft with a non-defective unit, or replace the entire engine assembly fitted with a non-defective countershaft.
