Defect
During manufacturing of the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system, the soldering process used to bond capacitors to the electronic circuit board within the control unit created voids at the cathode terminal junction inside some capacitors. Electrochemical corrosion progressively forms an oxide film within these voids, preventing the capacitor from suppressing voltage-induced electrical noise. As a result, the sensor that detects brake pedal travel malfunctions and triggers unintended brake assist activation. In the worst case, the brakes may apply suddenly without the brake lights illuminating.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, add a wiring harness with an additional capacitor to the VSA modulator control unit.
