Defect
The steering lock device contains a lock bar that was improperly cast, resulting in microscopic cracks on its surface. Repeated locking and unlocking causes these cracks to propagate until the bar fractures, preventing the steering from being unlocked. In the worst case, the fractured lock bar may snag during steering operation, causing loss of steering control.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the steering lock device with a corrected part.
