Filing in context
The Service brake — general is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 16 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 21 Honda notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 248 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 10 months.
Defect
In the brake master cylinder, the material and geometry of the secondary cup are improper. The cup may swell due to plasticizer that has leached from the reservoir tank hose into the brake fluid, and may also deform due to thermal expansion caused by engine heat during driving. This reduces sealing performance, allowing brake fluid to leak past the seal when the brake pedal is applied slowly. In the worst case, stopping distance is extended.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the brake master cylinder assembly with the corrected part.
