Filing in context
The Other (Body/Frame) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 28 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 22 Honda notifications from 2021 in this archive. For scale, 513 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 1 year and 8 months.
Issue
On the tailgate open stay, the attachment structure between the lower ball joint and the body-side ball stud is improperly designed. As a result, the clip securing the ball joint to the ball stud may deform and lift out of position. If use continues in this condition, repeated opening and closing of the tailgate may cause the ball joint to separate from the vehicle body, and the tailgate may suddenly drop.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the tailgate open stay and the ball joint separation prevention cover with new parts. Because supply of the corrected/revised parts requires additional time, an interim measure will be applied: the attachment point between the lower ball joint and the body-side ball stud will be secured with a cable tie.
