Filing in context
The Shock absorber is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 6 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 35 UD Trucks notifications from 2018 in this archive. For scale, 2,723 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 9 months.
Defect
On large-duty trucks equipped with air suspension and a ride-height adjustment system, the shock absorber piston structure is improperly designed. Lateral forces cause excessive contact pressure between the piston and cylinder wall, and repeatedly raising the vehicle to maximum ride height and lowering it during loading and unloading operations can score the inner cylinder wall at the piston ring groove. Continued use allows metal fragments to accumulate and adhere at the piston ring, causing bending or fracture of the shock absorber. In the worst case, the damaged shock absorber contacts the tire, causing a burst or generating heat sufficient to start a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the shock absorbers with the corrected parts. In addition, distribute a supplementary addendum to the owner's manual describing the operating characteristics of the ride-height adjustment system.
