Filing in context
The Battery is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 20 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 18 UD Trucks notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 3,281 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 7 months.
Defect
On large trucks, the battery hold-down plate is improperly shaped, causing the power cable to contact the plate's edge when attached to the battery terminal. Continued operation in this condition wears through the cable insulation, resulting in a short circuit. In the worst case, the engine may stall during driving and fail to restart.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, install protective material on the edge of the battery hold-down plate. Additionally, inspect the power cable; if damage is found, apply protective material or replace the cable with a new part.
