Filing in context
The Parking Brake (General) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 16 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 27 Mazda notifications from 2017 in this archive. For scale, 769 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 8 months.
Defect
On the rear wheel brake calipers, the boot seal structure is improper, allowing water to enter the caliper interior and causing rust and corrosion to develop on the shaft. Continued use degrades shaft sliding performance and reduces parking brake braking force. In the worst case, the vehicle may begin to roll.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, inspect the brake caliper shaft. Units with rust present must have the brake caliper replaced with the corrected/revised part. Units without rust must have the boot kit replaced with the corrected/revised part. Because preparation of replacement parts requires time, owners will be notified of the defect and advised to exercise caution; inspections will be carried out beginning with manual transmission vehicles.
