Defect

The waterproofing structure of the coupler connecting the brake light switch to the harness is inadequate. When the coupler is exposed to water, moisture travels along the wire cores into the brake light switch, causing internal corrosion. Continued use allows the internal circuit to short circuit, and in the worst case, the fuse blows, disabling the headlights, brake lights, and tail lights.

Corrective action

On all vehicles, replace the brake light switch-side coupler with a corrected part that includes a waterproof cover. On vehicles where a waterproof cover is not installed on the harness-side coupler, add a waterproof cover.
