Filing in context
The Wiper is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 14 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 16 Subaru notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 443 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 years and 3 months.
Defect
In the wiper system, improper manufacturing of the front wiper motor bottom cover — which houses the electrical circuit — may cause the relay joint with electrical contacts to interfere with the worm wheel. When the wiper is operated with snow accumulated on the cowl panel and then switched off, the wiper arm may be unable to return to its park position. The resulting reaction force on the arm causes the relay joint contacts to repeatedly switch on and off through the worm wheel, generating arc discharge at the contact points. In the worst case, this arc discharge may cause a vehicle fire.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the front wiper motor bottom cover with a corrected part.
