Filing in context
The Drivetrain / Power Transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 6 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 31 Hino notifications from 2016 in this archive. For scale, 4,351 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 5 years and 4 months.
Defect
In the 12-speed mechanical automatic transmission used in heavy-duty trucks, the planetary carrier has insufficient strength. Repeated gear changes cause wear on the pinion shaft, which breaks the spring pin securing the shaft and allows the shaft to contact the transmission case. Continued operation produces abnormal noise and, in the worst case, may render the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the auxiliary case assembly containing the planetary carrier with a corrected part. During replacement, inspect the interior of the transmission case; if interference marks are found on the inner wall, replace the entire transmission assembly with a corrected part. Because full parts supply will require additional time, inspect the oil first and prioritize replacement on vehicles showing the highest concentration of wear particles.
