Filing in context
The Fuel Filter is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 11 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 12 Daihatsu notifications from 2015 in this archive. For scale, 3,789 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years.
Defect
On vehicles converted to a combined CNG/gasoline fuel system, the fuel filter is mounted in an incorrect position, allowing engine resonance to pulverize the filter element. The resulting powder can block the CNG injectors, restricting fuel delivery to the engine. This causes a warning light to illuminate and the engine to run roughly and, in the worst case, the engine may stall.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, relocate the fuel filter bracket mounting point to the frame inside the engine compartment and replace the fuel filter, filter connection hoses, and hose clips with new units. On vehicles where element pulverization is confirmed, disassemble the CNG injector assembly, clean the fuel passages, and replace the CNG injectors with new units.
