Defect
On rear two-axle drive trucks, the backlash between the spline section of the front flange on the forward rear-axle final drive and the spline shaft was set incorrectly, causing excessive force to act on the flange-to-spline shaft fastening bolts. The bolts cannot withstand the torque loads during vehicle launch and sustain damage. Continued use may cause the bolts to fracture, allowing the propeller shaft connected to the flange to detach and rendering the vehicle inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the flange with a corrected part and replace the fastening bolts, washers, and spacers with new parts.
