Filing in context
The Exhaust Emission Reduction Device is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 21 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 28 Hino notifications from 2013 in this archive. For scale, 3,479 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 3 years and 2 months.
Defect
On large route buses, an incorrect engine control program allows post-injection fuel from automatic DPR (exhaust gas purification device) regeneration during vehicle standstill to enter the EGR circuit, where it is cooled by the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler. This generates and accumulates carbon deposits that progressively block the EGR cooler. Continued operation under this condition causes turbine blade damage, illuminates the engine check lamp, and results in insufficient power output. In the worst case, the vehicle may be unable to travel normally.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, reprogram the engine control program, replace the exhaust brake with the corrected part, and replace the EGR cooler, EGR valve, turbocharger, and EGR pipe with new parts.
Affected models & chassis ranges
