Filing in context
The Automatic Transmission is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 8 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 26 Hino notifications from 2011 in this archive. For scale, 3,342 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 4 months.
Defect
On vehicles equipped with a 12-speed automatic transmission, the shift unit cylinder is machined improperly, allowing foreign matter to enter the lever shaft area that links to the shift position sensor. Combined with insufficient grease application on the lever shaft, the shaft develops poor sliding performance, causing the crimped joint connecting the lever and shaft sections to loosen. The sensor can no longer detect the correct shift position, resulting in an inability to shift gears. In the worst case, the vehicle may become inoperable.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the shift unit with a conforming unit.
