Filing in context
The Other (Engine) is the most frequently cited component category in this archive, appearing in 46 of its 4,890 filings. This filing is one of 12 Suzuki notifications from 2011 in this archive. For scale, 1,765 of the 4,890 filings in this archive report a larger number of affected vehicles; the vehicles involved here were manufactured over a span of about 2 years and 4 months.
Defect
The spring inside the accessory drive belt tensioner — which drives the alternator and other auxiliary components — was manufactured incorrectly, causing the spring to fracture and the tensioner to lose its ability to maintain belt tension. This results in reduced belt tension and abnormal noise. If operation continues, the belt may disengage, disabling drive to the alternator pulley, water pump pulley, and power steering pump pulley. This causes insufficient charging and insufficient cooling, triggering warning lights, and also disables power steering assistance, increasing steering effort.
Corrective action
On all vehicles, replace the accessory drive belt tensioner with a known-good unit.
